Most importantly Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, soon to be mothers, and even single fathers. It’s is very important to celebrate motherhood and being fruitful and obedient. Many times we underestimate or undermine the power of a mother. But liked we learned last week a mothers job is endless. On top of doing everything to build and uphold our household, we must not forget that we set the tone for our homes and future homes to come.
2 Timothy 1:5
I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
In this verse, we learn that the sincere faith that Timothy carried was passed down from his mother and grandmother. What an incredible gift to inherit. Faith builds a relationship with God. Faith will get you places that no man can see. Moreover, if faith can be passed down…what else can?
And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”
Just like we can pass down faith. We can pass down love, hate, and generational curses. We can punish our children to come just by what we implant in the children that we have now.
As mothers, we don’t know the power we hold or at least I didn’t. I was a teenage mother I learned from observation. I started to notice a correlation between myself and my daughter. For example, when I started to want more in life her dreams and aspirations grew. When I started going back to school, she looked up what colleges she would be interested in. When I started to increase my faith, she wanted to learn more about God. When I got baptized that became a goal for her. Therefore I was already setting a tone for her I just didn’t know it.
Hence, we should never be negative to our children. Behavior is learned and passed down. It’s so easy to speak death to other people and their situations without even noticing it. Things that are hateful, unreceptive, and unconstructive shouldn’t be spoken at all. Putting them down until you have a whole generation full of resentment ready to pass that down is terrifying.
The words of the reckless pierce like swords,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
The power of being a mother is that we have the opportunity to change generational curses. Pouring life into the ones we love. There is power in Jesus, faith, and prayer.
Be the mother that should be celebrated. Be the daughter that is receptive to love and a child of God willing to accept and learn His word.
