Hello, if you are keeping up with our blog you know that today we are starting our series on the 10 commandments. One of the commandments that I think is easily looked over and ignored is the 9th commandment “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. “Exodus 20:16 (NIV) This commandment simply means do not lie, speak falsely, equivocate, or deceive the people around.
In modern-day terminology, this includes rumors, gossiping, and being messy! This is all the “shade” that you can speak at the cost of other people. I believe that each and every one of us can think of a time that we lied on someone or someone has lied on us but that doesn’t mean that it is acceptable.
Call for Independence
Recently I went out of town and visited family that I haven’t seen in a while. I have been absent from that town for years but when I got home I started to hear all the rumors about me during my absence. Things that I never did, words that I never said but yet that was the environment that I walked into. It hurts because even though I came for the love the hate followed along. For years I didn’t give anyone anything to talk about so they created their own storyline for my life.
Not once did anyone call me? No one ever sent me a text, email, or direct message but yet they spoke falsely. It wouldn’t have hurt me if it was random town people but it hurt because it was people that I called family. It could have taken one person to discover the truth of a situation. It takes one person to not spread misery. And I believe that was the reason the Lord put that as a commandment is because He knew the sickness behind it. Spreading lies is like a plague.
I forgave them because some people sin out of ignorance including myself. I also forgave them because of the misery that they held… I didn’t want that to spread to myself. My relationship with God has taught me that you don’t have to be mean because other people around you are. You don’t have to speak negatively on someone character without knowing that person. You can be your own person with the risk that you may not always fit in. It’s okay to be the light in a room full of darkness.
I believe that all of us have fallen short of the 9th commandment. However, if you are reading this we have time to change. The plague can come to an end. We can ask the Lord for forgiveness for our self as well as others.
Ask for Forgiveness
“Lord forgive me for any seeds that I have planted that is unlike you Lord. Lord forgive me for the sins I have commented even in my ignorance. Please forgive me for any lie that I have told, any rumor I have spread, any gossip that has lingered on my tongue and any behavior that is not in your likeness.
Lord, I love you and I need you. Please purse and purify my soul. For Lord I praise your name, I surrender myself and give myself to you. Work in me for the greater of your kingdom”
In the Lord’s name, we pray
