Initially writing this post I wondered how could I explain or convey this commandment. Exodus 20:14 “Thou shall not commit adultery. “As I pondered and asked God the only word that would come to my head is loyalty. Loyalty to your spouse as well as loyalty to the Lord we serve.
Adultery is defined as having voluntary sexual intercourse with another person besides your husband or wife. But I also thought about Matthew 12:39, “But Jesus replied, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give the sign of the prophet Jonah.” In these terms, Jesus is speaking on the loyalty of someone that would ask this kind of question. Only an unloyal generation would question Him. If a person cannot be loyal to a spouse which they can see, imagine what they would do with God which they cannot see. I believe that God is demanding loyalty in the character of the people that serve him.
Are you loyal enough to fight the lust and the temptations that life brings you? Are you willing to do the right thing no matter what your own personal desires may be? How loyal are you?
As I would like to think is commandment is simple, it may the most command commandment to be broken. Of course, when we think of adultery we can think of the hurt, betrayal, and sin behind the act. We can think of the broken promises and pieces that have to be put back together. We can think of the broken bond that we once shared with the one we love. I can go on and on about the person that you are committed to or how they as well as yourself deserve faithfulness. But I believe that it is more to that. It’s the vow that you made for one another and the promise that you made before God. What does it say about your character when that is broken?
What an amazing gift, that we have a loving and forgiving God. If we confess our sins and ask for forgiveness than we are forgiven just like King David was. The Lord isn’t looking for a perfect person. But He is looking for someone that is after His heart. Someone to be loyal to Him. Someone that loves Him enough to want Him and only Him.
May God be with you even in your darkest moments. May you call out to Him even when you are ashamed. Let Him use you as a loyal soldier!

But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.
